Deep Root is a small sub label to Universal Egg which is runned by Perch of Zion Train. The musical policy of the labels is to release sound system style dub and reggae music and so far he has done a pretty good job in doing so. First appearing in 1997 with releasing the Jah Free classic "Rod of Correction" which done its rounds of sound system play through the years. In the beginning all outputs was released on seven inch vinyl although it was just recently that we came to see the first couple of 10:inches being released as well. The Deep Root label have never been afraid of venturing in young and new talents for their releases which also is the case of this release. Here Deep Root have linked up with Dub Terror for a stunning debut release featuring UK roots singer Tena Stelin on vocals.
Dub Terror is the brainchild of producer and sound engineering Simone Lombardi aka Dub Student. Dub Student hails from Turin, north Italy, and was first introduced to the sound of UK dub by Italian sound system King David Warriors for whom he also started shows for. His passion for sound led him to London, England, where he studied Sonic Arts and learned the trade of sound engineering. Musicians included in the Dub Terror Allstars team are Jonah Dan, Alpha & Omega and Stei Wilkinson whom more or less are well known names in the dub circuit. Among the vocalists who have worked with Dub Student you'll find the African chanter Afrikan Simba and Zuli, who's unknown to me.
Soundclip - Tena Stelin - Child Soldiers
On the A-side of this 7:inch vinyl you'll find the heartical voice of Tena Stelin and like always Tena Stelin brings a intelligent view to the topic brought up. The topic being child soldiers which also is the title of the track. Tena cries out for these victims of circumstances and reasons rightfully that these children should be in school learning their lessons and not on the frontline fighting. The rhythm suits Tena Stelin perfectly and brings the best out of his sufferer style vocal.
Soundclip - Dub Terror Allstars - Child Soldiers Dub
The rhythm is a driving steppers with a very authentic and live feel to it due to the live instrumentation. It's like a combination of the good vibes of the seventies and the modern dub style of today. The high pitched moog sound that makes out the melody, in combination of a melodica in the background, brings a good portion of freshness to the rhythm. Dub Student's sound engineering skills shines bright since the sound has both depth and weight. The weight comes through even more on the dub version which showcases the bass with a ruffer sound and Dub Student's skills on the mixerboard since he tend to mix it live and direct in the style of the old time dub masters like King Tubby. A quality release in the sense of both talent and sound. Do have in mind though that these Deep Root 7:inches are limited releases strictly! So don't wait too long if the tune does it for you.
