REVIEW: OMAR PERRY & MIKA - Borderline/SISTER NADIA - Deliver Us Jah (Asaiah Records)

Dubcreator and Sister Nadia are the founding forces behind Asaiah Records. This 10:inch vinyl is the first release out of many to follow on the label. I guess after having a couple of releases under his belt Dubcreator felt secure enough to set up a label of his own with his wife vocalist Sister Nadia. Not suprisingly the rhythm is built, produced and mixed by Dubcreator which gives it that special sound and vibe that Dubcreator have originated for himself. Both vocal tracks on the vinyl features on the same rhythm which is a shuffling stepper. Apart from the refreshing horns in the intro and chorus the rhythm trods along in the same good manner all through.

A-side features deejay Omar Perry and singer Mika in combination. Omar Perry is the son of Lee Perry who've caught some recognition of his own after releasing material on, the now discontinued, Soundboy label some time ago. He resides in Belgium where he runs Own Mission Sound System when not performing live alongside his backing band Deep Culcha. Who his singing partner is I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised though if we would to hear more from Mika since Dubcreator seems work with his choice of vocalists more than one time around.

Their tune is called "Borderline" and with borderline they mean the one that's between a truth and a lie. Mika's voice is not so in front of the mix as Omar Perry's is which makes it hard to hear what she's singing in some parts. Omar Perry on the other hand comes through loud and clear with a style very similar to some of Jamaicas more famous Bobo deejays. The combination of the two works perfectly as one takes over where the other leaves off.

On the B-side Sister Nadia cries out to Jah for deliverence from the terror and fear that roams this world. Some of you might recognize Sister Nadia from a 7:inch that out a couple of years ago on the New York label Unity Sound (which unfortunetly also have shut down) called "Life is Today". The message is good yet I find the her voice a little too anonymous to lift up the vibes of this stomping Dubcreator rhythm. I believe the best is yet to come from this female singer since this is a leap forward from her last output.

Both dub versions sounds good. "Dub The Border" begins straight away while "Deliver The Dub" build up a vibe with a long intro before the drum and the bass really kicks in. The bongos which one almost doesn't notice at all in the vocal versions are here being put in the forefront of the mix as Dubcreator does his thing on the mixingboard. All tunes mentioned are expected for release on 10:inch vinyl sometime in Decemeber 2005. I for one will watch how this label will develop in the future since I believe tunes of real calibre are to come.
